BTB AND BAS JOIN FORCES TO ENHANCE TOURIST FACILITIES AT COCKSCOMB BASIN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Belize City, January 29th, 2020: The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has partnered once again with the Belize Audubon Society (BAS) to enhance and improve the visitor experience in tourism areas throughout Belize.

Through the most recent partnership, the BTB and BAS collaborated to construct a 30 ft. x 30 ft. picnic shed equipped with wooden picnic tables at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (CBWS). The shed, constructed with a concrete base and galvanized roof cap, was built at an approximate cost of BZ$15,000.00 and is aligned with the nature-based product development component of the National Sustainable Tourism Master Plan (NSTMP) 2030.

The CBWS is the world’s first jaguar preserve (Est. 1986) and according to BAS statistics it welcomed approximately 10,400 visitors in 2018. The sanctuary ranks fifth out of twelve sites to visit in Belize. Visits to the sanctuary continue to increase due to a growing birdwatching niche market and many adventure activities including camping, river rafting, walking trails and hiking, among others. The sanctuary also serves as the main entrance to Victoria Peak, the highest mountainous peak in the country.

This is the second project of its kind through this partnership. The first was completed in March. 2019 at St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park.
