Legal Counsel

Role Purpose:

The Legal Counsel serves in an advisory capacity and is responsible for advising on matters that may have legal implications such as contracts, litigation risks, etc. The officer works under direct supervision of the Director of Tourism and assists to provide legal advisory and interpretation service to the management of Belize Tourism Board to ensure statutory compliance with existing laws and regulations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Draft, consolidate, organize, review, manage all BTB contracts and MOU’s
  • Facilitate the enforcement process relating to accommodations, tour operators and tour guides
  • Prepare legal opinions and advise on all legal matters for the Executive Team and Board of Directors
  • Advise on the development of internal policy, and advise on letters
  • Represent the BTB in civil litigation as an instructing attorney
  • Engage in policy consultation and review of technical notes
  • Act as Legal Counsel on behalf of BTB in Inter-ministerial committees

  • Qualifications: Education / Experience / Skills required of the position.
      • A degree in Law from a recognized university andability to practice Law in Belize.
      • Minimum of three years’ experience in the relevant field
      • Broad exposure and relevant experience in legal practice in contract/agreement drafting
      • Experience in working with donor agencies will be an added advantage
      • Must be computer literate
      • Proficiency in English language (Spanish proficiency will be an asset)
