Rehabilitation of KHMH Accident and Emergency Department

Belize City, Belize, August 26, 2024: Today, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMHA) and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) celebrated the successful rehabilitation of the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department. This significant project follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in February, which addressed urgent post-COVID repairs and renovations.

The BTB provided funding for essential repairs and upgrades, including replacing old plumbing, installing air conditioning units, renovating the department’s interior spaces and roof, and adding finishing touches such as painting and installing fixtures.

During the ceremony, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Hon. Anthony Mahler stated, “The health of a nation is its wealth.  We are here as custodians of the tourism industry to build Belize and push it forward sustainably.  In retrofitting, refurbishing, and improving KHMH, we ensure that our Belizean people and visitors receive quality treatment when needed.”

Minister of Health and Wellness, Hon. Kevin Bernard, also remarked, “The accident and emergency unit is often the first point of many seeking urgent medical care; it is where critical decisions are made, lives are saved, and hope is restored.”

Other notable speakers at the event included Mrs. Chandra Nisbeth-Cansino (CEO, KHMHA), Mrs. Yvone Swan (Director of Medical Services), and Mrs. Claudette Dakers-Norales (Information Officer, MOHW).  Also present were Mrs. Nicole Solano (CEO, Ministry of Tourism & Diaspora Relations), Mr. Evan Tillett (Director of Tourism, BTB), Mr. Josue Carballo (Director of Industry Development, BTB), Mrs. Angelique Samuels Haseley (Director of Human Resources & IT, BTB) and other distinguished guests.

As the nation’s primary healthcare provider, KHMH is crucial in delivering medical services to the Belizean population. By investing in the health sector, the BTB underscores its dedication to creating a safer, more welcoming environment for locals and tourists, enhancing the country’s appeal as a premier destination.
