WestJet Touches Down in Belize
Belize City, October 31, 2016 – On Saturday, October 29, 2016, WestJet Airlines made its inaugural flight to Belize, making them the only carrier to directly connect Canada and Belize.
Belize welcomed 130 passengers on the first flight from Canada. Inbound and outbound passengers were given souvenirs to commemorate this momentous occasion. A short ceremony was held at the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, where the audience heard from the Chief Executive Officer of the Belize Airport and Concession Company – Mr. Jorge Espat, the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation – Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., and WestJet’s Regional Manager for Caribbean Airport Operations – Ms. Linda Dawe.
Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr. stated, “Today, we are witnesses to a historic milestone for our nation, and in particular for our tourism, trade and aviation sectors. While this is the third major introduction of a new airline partner in recent months, today’s holds a very significant and unparalleled opportunity for Belize. We certainly foresee an increase in travel to Belize from thousands of Canadians who have been deterred in the past due to inconvenient layovers and connections in the United States. After today, this is no longer the case. Our sincerest gratitude goes out to WestJet for their partnership and belief in a future with Belize.”
The flight now operates twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday, connecting passengers between the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Belize, and the Toronto Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Canada.
